[sc34wg3] what's the most basic issue?

Several have asked me why I haven't been sending
a flurry of notes to the list lately.

Please don't misinterpret my silence. We're having a
great discussion here, and I'm reading it with
interest. I hope and believe we're getting somewhere.

Instead of volunteering what *I* think (something I
have probably done too much), I'd like to ask
a problem-solving, consensus-seeking question:

"What's the most *basic* issue that divides us?"

I suspect we can more easily (and less painfully) deal
with the question of whether Issue A or Issue B is more
basic, than with either Issue A or Issue B itself. If
we can establish consensus on the roots of the issues
that confront us, then maybe we can deal with the
decisions one at a time -- the most basic one first of
all.

It's impossible to deal with all issues at once. It
might be helpful and enlightening to figure out which
issues depend on which other issues.
