I'm sorry that my attempt to reach a consensus on the structure of
13250 and related standards was such a miserable failure. I shall
think twice about trying "corridor diplomacy" in the future!
As I have pointed out to Mary, there is no inherent contradiction
in the New Work Item Proposal (N358) and the recommendations that
came out of the Baltimore meeting (N372). The former is deliberately
a bit more vague than the latter, because once it has been voted on
and (hopefully) accepted it binds us quite a lot.
Our own documents, on the other hand, like N372 and N323 ("Guide to
the topic map standardization") are more in the nature of snapshots
of our thinking at a particular time. They are in no way cast in
stone.
I welcome a discussion of the issues people are unhappy about. As
I see it, there are two separate items: the question of a multipart
as opposed to multiple standards, and the disposition of material
across the parts/standards. I will start new threads for each of
these.
