| I think there's something worthwhile here in the concept that
| components of scope might play differing roles.

Agreed. For the following reasons:

 1) It is intuitively appealing,

 2) it makes scope structurally equivalent to associations, and

 3) it takes what Steve and Geir Ove call "axes" in their scope paper
    (which we've already found useful) a step further.

More thought is needed, however.
