This is the first issue of <span style="color:#b22222">The Newsgraph</span>, the fortnightly newsletter for those who have joined the Debategraph community. Please click the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the page if you don't wish to receive any further issues.<br>

<em>Debategraph</em> is growing rapidly (with 20+ million page views this year and a graph of over 85,000 ideas), and the newsletter is intended to become a community curated way for <em>Debategraphers</em> share information about their projects and build their map communities.<br>
<br>
To facilitate this we have created a special <em>Debategraph </em>map – the <a href="http://debategraph.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8bca56614e93f94790a92b74f&id=1997154a68&e=bbc3775e91" style="color:#17488a;text-decoration:underline;font-weight:normal" target="_blank">newsletter map </a>– where you can comment on items in the newsletter and suggest and submit your own items for the next newsletter.<br>

You can also join me for the launch of a long-term project that I have termed – a bit portentously – the <a href="#12cd1d0da246f389_civp" style="color:#17488a;text-decoration:underline;font-weight:normal">Civilization Project</a>.<br>

<span style="font-family:georgia, serif"><strong><span style="color:#b22222"><span>Contestable advocacy – and the web of reason</span></span></strong></span><br>
<br>
Our goal with <em>Debategraph</em> is to create a place on the web where reasoned discourse, civility and respect for alternative viewpoints are the norm. However, this doesn't mean that the discussion has to be anodyne. We welcome the clear and forthright – indeed provocative – statements of strongly held viewpoints provided they are backed by argumentation free of abuse or <em>ad hominem </em>attacks.<br>
<br>
Indeed we plan to encourage this type of expression. Starting with the next edition the right-hand column of the newsletter will contain a section called <span style="color:#b22222">Balloons </span>(as in the spheres that background ideas in our flash views) where you can make a controversial claim - provided you make your reasoning transparent in a <em>Debategraph </em>map so that it can be disputed by others. We hope this evolves into a new form of blogging - let's call it<em> contestable advocacy</em>.<br>

Nobody doubts that the world will undergo seismic changes over the coming decades – a shift in the global balance of economic power, technological changes so profound as to potentially change human nature itself, unprecedentedly large movements of people across national frontiers and environmental challenges that humanity is only starting to get to grips with. <br>
<br>
What will these changes mean for human civilization? Do we - as Samuel Huntington has argued - face the prospect of a <a href="http://debategraph.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8bca56614e93f94790a92b74f&id=7a6c388b27&e=bbc3775e91" style="color:#17488a;text-decoration:underline;font-weight:normal" target="_blank">clash of civilizations</a>? These are, to put it mildly, large issues. Can using a tool like <em>Debategraph </em>help to elucidate them? I think it is worth testing the hypothesis - especially as <em>Debategraph</em> is designed to build not just individual debate maps but large interrelated map clusters - just what is needed for something like this. I have just created a <a href="http://debategraph.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8bca56614e93f94790a92b74f&id=5181b6bc3e&e=bbc3775e91" style="color:#17488a;text-decoration:underline;font-weight:normal" target="_blank">home map </a>for the project where I expand on these points.<br>
